The cable car lifts you from Zermatt over glaciers and ridges to 3,883 m. From there, just a few steps take you across the highest border in the Alps, from Switzerland into Italy. Your local guide accompanies you on the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, shares the stories behind both mountain villages, and shows you views you would easily miss on your own, before lunch awaits in the Italian town of Cervinia.

Description

Your guide accompanies you the whole way from Zermatt to Cervinia, across the Klein Matterhorn and the highest border in the Alps. Along the way, you decide together where to get off, take a short walk, or simply stay longer for the view. Your guide knows the stories behind both mountain villages, knows which viewpoints are truly worth it, and can recommend the right restaurant in Cervinia for an authentic Italian lunch, before heading back to Switzerland. Suitable for groups, companies and enthusiastic walkers who prefer to keep things easy.

Meet at 9.00 am at the Matterhorn Express valley station, where you will be welcomed by your guide.

Take the cable car up to the Klein Matterhorn (3'883 m), the highest mountain station in Europe! Take a short break – the viewing platform and the Glacier Palace are waiting for you.

Crossing the Alps from the Klein Matterhorn (3'883 m) to Testa Grigia (3'480 m) and continuing on to Cervinia. At one of the stops, you can take another break, have lunch (at a restaurant of your choice) and go for a short hike – you decide all this together with your hiking guide.

Return journey from Cervinia to Zermatt and farewell.

  • Matterhorn Alpine Crossing train fare: from CHF 147.50 (one way) or CHF 240.00 (return) for adults (prices vary by season)
  • Children aged 3 to 8 travel free, children aged 9 to 15 receive a 50% discount
  • With a GA, Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass, you get a 50% discount on the route between Zermatt and Testa Grigia (more information here)
  • Crystal Ride (cabin with glass floor): CHF 10.00 surcharge per ride

  • From the valley station in Zermatt, the Matterhorn Glacier Ride I takes you via Furi, Schwarzsee and Trockener Steg up to the Klein Matterhorn (3,883 m): Europe's highest mountain station and the world's highest glacier palace.
  • The Matterhorn Glacier Ride II then continues to the next station, Testa Grigia (3,480 m), located on the border between Switzerland and Italy.
  • South side of the Matterhorn: continuing on to Cervinia via Cime Bianche Laghi and Plan Maison, you experience the Matterhorn from its other side.

What equipment do I need for a hike?

Good hiking boots, clothing suitable for the weather, sun protection and sufficient drinks are basic requirements. For alpine tours, we will provide you with additional equipment such as poles or crampons if required. You will receive a detailed packing list when you book.

When is the best time of year for hiking in Zermatt?

The classic hiking season runs from June to October. There are also wonderful tours in spring and fall, while special offers such as winter hiking, snowshoeing and glacier trails are available in winter.

How challenging are the hikes?
