FAQ

What can I expect on a snowshoe tour in Zermatt?

Our snowshoe tours take you through snow-covered landscapes, away from the slopes and far from the hustle and bustle. One popular tour leads to hidden glacier caves, which are a unique experience. With snowshoes, you hike safely through deep snow and experience the quiet winter world up close - guided by our experienced mountain guides.

At what time can you go snowshoeing?

The classic time for snowshoeing is between December and April, depending on the conditions. During the winter months, there are also various winter hiking trails and official snowshoe trails that can be used.

What requirements do I have to fulfill to participate?

Snowshoeing is suitable for anyone who has a general level of fitness and hikes regularly, for example. It requires no special knowledge and can be done throughout the winter.

How safe is snowshoeing?

Our trained mountain guides ensure the safety of the tour at all times. Your mountain guide has all safety-relevant materials with him/her and is trained to be able to act in an emergency situation. In addition, every participant is equipped with an avalanche transceiver and is taught how to use it before the tour. If you have any questions about avalanche awareness, please do not hesitate to ask your mountain guide.

How difficult is snowshoeing?

Even if you have no experience with snowshoes, you can join us on any tour. Your mountain guide will show you how to use snowshoes - it's easy and you'll quickly get used to them, as they are only there to help you on snowy trails. You are in your own hiking boots and get into the snowshoes.

What shoes do I need to wear for the tour?

To get into the snowshoes, you will need your own hiking boots. These must be at least ankle-high and should have a slightly sturdier sole (e.g. winter hiking boots with a good sole). If you are unsure, please contact us with a photo of your shoes and we will give you feedback.

Are the tours on offer also possible with children?

Basically yes. We rely on the parents, who are better able to assess their child. For safety reasons, however, we only take children on private tours and not on group tours.
To get a better assessment, we can recommend the following:
Beginners' snowshoe hike: approx. 8-10 years
Matterhorn Glacier Trail: approx. 10-12 years
The difference is that the beginners' tour is more flexible, so it can be better adapted to the level, and because the Matterhorn Glacier Trail is a longer tour.

How does the Matterhorn Glacier Trail Tour from ZERMATTERS differ from that of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG?

Zermatt Bergbahnen AG and ZERMATTERS have a partnership for this tour. The tour can be booked through both companies and it is the same offer. The participants of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG will be sent to us the day before and added to our existing groups. If there are only a few registrations, it is possible that the registrations from Zermatt Bergbahnen AG are decisive for the tour to take place, due to the minimum number required (3).

What if no group comes together for the Matterhorn Glacier Trail?

We require at least 3 people for a group tour of the Matterhorn Glacier Trail. The day before we receive the additional participants from Zermatt Bergbahnen AG and only then can we confirm or cancel the tour. If the tour is canceled due to an insufficient number of participants, there is always the option of rebooking for a private tour. Otherwise we will try to postpone the date or we will find a suitable solution together. In the event of a definitive cancellation, the amount paid will be refunded.
