Discover fall with ZERMATTERS

In autumn, Zermatt shows its full diversity: from idyllic hikes around the village to alpine adventures high above the glaciers. Guided tours through the Gorner Gorge, varied trails for bikers or the first ski turns on the glacier open up an impressive range. For this blog article, we spoke to Aurélie, a certified hiking guide. She knows the most beautiful places, gives tips for special experiences and reveals how you can enjoy autumn in Zermatt to the full.

Zermatt hiking paradise: suitable for hiking vacations or day trips

The Zermatt - Matterhorn destination is a true Eldorado for hiking enthusiasts in the fall. Well-maintained paths lead through colorful larch forests, along panoramic trails and past sparkling mountain lakes. We put together individual programs. Be it for a leisurely day trip or a whole week of hiking adventures. Our certified hiking guides will accompany you professionally and with a wealth of local knowledge through the fascinating landscape around the Matterhorn.

"In the fall, you have to plan the tours a little more carefully," explains Aurélie. "It gets dark earlier, so I always take a headlamp with me on long hikes. But it's often enough to just set off earlier. You should also bear in mind that it can get slippery, frozen patches are not uncommon."

When it comes to clothing, she relies on the layering principle: "Several thin layers are ideal because you can react flexibly. A good rain jacket and trousers are essential, as is a warm down jacket for windy moments. But my insider tip is an umbrella, it really keeps you dry. And I always have a dry T-shirt in a drybag in my rucksack."

Our guided hike into the Verlorene Tal is particularly impressive and secluded, where the silence of the mountains is at its most beautiful. Aurélie also recommends the Zermatt route via Trift up via Höhbalmen to the balancing basins in Zmutttal - her personal favorite place at this time of year. "The colors are unique, orange and yellow glowing larches in front of snow-covered peaks, almost like a little Lapland," she enthuses.

The wildlife also has its highlights: "In the fall, the ibex and chamois come closer to the village because they find more food at lower altitudes. They are particularly easy to spot in Randa early in the morning or in the evening when it's quiet."

If you prefer to tackle the routes at a sporty pace, you can also complete all our day and multi-day programs with us as a trail running experience.

Biking during Indian summer: the right experience for every taste

After the Bike World Championships at the beginning of September at the latest, the whole world knows that biking in Valais is also very popular in autumn, and Zermatt is the perfect starting point. Whether it's a leisurely e-bike evening tour through the magnificent landscape or a sporty, demanding bike experience: You'll find the right challenge here. Would you like to improve your technique? Then you can take part in special bike courses and get valuable tips from our experienced guides.

"It's simply particularly beautiful to bike in the fall," says Aurélie. "The colors of the larches glow, the air is clear - and at the same time it's often much quieter on the trails. Just remember that it gets chilly more quickly in the evening, so it's better to pack an extra layer."

Alpine adventures even after the height of summer: it's never too late to start mountaineering

If you want to get up high in the fall, the terrain here is varied. On the Riffelhorn , you can experience alpine climbing with a short approach and a breathtaking panorama of the Matterhorn and the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks. If you want to test your head for heights, you will find your adventure on the Mammut via ferrata . This is also ideal training for gaining more alpine experience step by step.

"Especially in the fall, the clear air is a gift, you can see incredibly far," says our hiking guide Aurélie. "But you shouldn't underestimate the cold. Whether on the via ferrata or on the glacier: a warm jacket in your rucksack is a must."

A special destination for mountain newcomers is the Breithorn. Guided by our mountain guides, you will enter the world of four-thousand-metre peaks and get your first taste of real mountain air. After this impressive tour, we recommend a visit to the Glacier Palace, which was set up by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG and can be explored on your own.

And while we're talking about glaciers and mountain railroads, something should not go unmentioned: Piste skiing is also possible. The later in autumn, the more kilometers of slopes are available. So, are you ready for it yet?

Bad weather activities with ZERMATTERS: exciting experiences despite the rain

Our motto is "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing". Autumn in particular shows that rainy days also have their own special charm. As Aurélie says: "It's especially exciting to discover new things in the rain. Plus, thanks to the beautiful autumn colors, it's bright despite the wet weather." And the best thing? When the sun shines again and it's fresh enough, the wet grasses freeze and look spectacular. For her, a small gas stove is also a must: "A warm cup of tea or coffee at a shelter along the way makes a rainy day much more pleasant."

For the adventurous, there is the Gorge Adventure, which can be done in almost any weather. Whether as a family adventure or in a group, the wild gorge is an unforgettable experience. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can visit the underground Matterhorn Museum and immerse themselves in the history of the Zermatt mountains and their pioneers.
