The Matterhorn Trek is a top-class hut trekking experience! The route stretches over around 50 km and leads from Zermatt to the Hörnlihütte at an altitude of over 3,260 m - a tour that requires fitness and mountain experience. Each stage is unique: from rare alpine flowers and impressive high mountain panoramas to the mighty north face of the Matterhorn.
On request and for an extra charge, the tour can be crowned with an ascent of the Breithorn on the last day. You can hire the necessary glacier equipment (crampons and climbing harness) from us - your mountain guide will bring it directly to the Gandegghütte.
All overnight stays in the mountain huts are organized in advance. A warm welcome awaits you there with a welcome aperitif and an invigorating dinner - perfect moments to pause and enjoy.

The huts
General information about the huts
Berggasthaus Trift (2,337 m)
The traditional Berggasthaus Trift is situated at 2,337 m, away from the lifts or pistes - accessible via a well-maintained but steep hiking trail through larch forest and the Trift Gorge.
With 48 beds in double rooms, a camp and family management by hut warden Hugo Biner (qualified mountain guide and ski instructor), the hut offers home-made specialties such as apple pie and dried meat.It is a popular stopover on routes such as the Mettelhorn and Wisshorn or a starting point for longer tours, such as the Zinalrothorn, and is open from June to September
Schönbiel hut (2,694 m)
The SAC Schönbiel hut is located at 2,694 m in the Zmutt valley and can accommodate 70 guests plus 12 in the winter room.
The current hut, which was built in 1955, is managed by Yolanda and Fredy Biner (qualified mountain guide). A renovation of the hut is planned for the coming years. Edward Whymper, the first person to climb the Matterhorn, visited the Schönbielhütte when it opened.
It is ideal for families and serves as a starting point for alpine tours to four-thousand-metre peaks and the Haute Route. In summer, accessible on foot from Schwarzsee (2½ hours) or Zermatt (4 hours).
Hörnlihütte (3,260 m)
The Hörnlihütte is located at 3,260 m on the Hörnligrat, below the Matterhorn, and sleeps 150 people. Built in 1880 and most recently extensively renovated (2013-2015), it is now managed by Edith and Martin Lehner (qualified mountain guide).
It serves as a central base for Matterhorn ascents and combines modern sustainability (solar power, water recycling) with a high level of comfort. Ascent from Schwarzsee takes 2 - 3 hours, from Zermatt 4 ½ hours
Gandegghütte (3,030 m)
The privately run Gandegghütte is located at 3,030 m in the Klein Matterhorn ski area, directly on a ridge between the Upper and Lower Theodul Glacier.
Originally built in 1885 and rebuilt in 1964, it offers 50 beds and functions as a restaurant in both summer and winter.
It is an ideal starting point for summits such as Breithorn, Klein Matterhorn or crossings to Hörnlihütte and Monte Rosa Hütte (4-5 h).
