High up!

Pollux or Castor

Take a comfortable cable car ride in the morning up to Klein Matterhorn at 3'883 m a.s.l, climb a 4'000er and spend the afternoon back at the village while enjoying a refreshing drink and wearing shorts.
This are Pollux and Castor!

Pollux 4'092 m a.s.l.

(Ice and rock tour)

The Pollux is located northwest of the Castor and is 4’092 m a.s.l. making it the smaller of the two peaks. The Pollux lies between the Breithorn and the Lyskamm. You reach the Pollux via the „Zwillingsjoch“.

Jules Jacot completed the first ascent on the 1st August 1864 (Swiss National day) with mountain guides Josef-Marie Perren and Peter Taugwalder.

The easiest way to reach the summit is from the Klein Matterhorn lift station. The tour can be completed in one day or in conjunction with a multi-day tour of the Monte Rosa massif. The Pollux can be climbed in the summer and the winter. In winter it can be done in combination with a beautiful ski decent over the Schwarztor.

The ascent to the Pollux summit is not particularly long (1 - 1.5 hours). It does however have a more demanding climbing section (difficulty level 2).

This tour is also an excellent preparation for the Matterhorn ascent.

Castor 4'223 m a.s.l.

(Ice tour)

Castor is one of the “twin” peaks, the other being Pollux, at 4'223 m a.s.l. Castor is the highest of the two peaks. Castor and Pollux are separated by the so-called “Zwillingsjoch” 3'845 m a.s.l.  The Italian-Swiss boarder runs between Pollux via Castor to the Lyskamm. The summit of Castor is on the Italian side.

The first ascent was made on August 23rd, 1861 by F.W. Jacomb and William Mathews with the mountain guide Michel Croz.

Castor is easily accessed from the Klein Matterhorn cable car station. This beautiful tour is completed in one day or it can be combined with a multi-day tour in the Monte Rosa massif. The ascent is from the Klein Matterhorn mountain station via the Zwillingsjoch and the west flank. It is a very scenic glacier tour. Castor can be climbed during the summer and winter. In winter, the summit experience is complemented by the spectacular Schwarztor descent.
